As a parent of two very different styles of learners, I understand the importance of having an educational environment that is both rigorous and flexible in meeting the needs of each individual child. In an environment, characterized by accelerated growth and widespread diversity, this is not easy but it is essential. We must be able to provide a world class education from early childhood, to the student who struggles with learning English as a second language, as well as the student who gets excited solving multi-variable calculus problems or wants to tell his story through journalism or documentary films. Our community has a rich history of developing leaders. We owe it to that history to ensure Mount Vernon Students have a world class education in our community schools. I am committed to working full time to ensure each of our schools is a center of academic excellence.
I believe that every child has the right to a high quality education that allows them to achieve their academic and social potential. My success as a community leader and international business executive is a direct result of my experience as a student of the public schools in this area. As Vice President of International Policy and Regulatory Affairs, Karen sat on individual corporate boards and operating committees of companies owned or partially owned by Verizon which contributed over $2 billion in annual gross revenues to Verizon's bottom line.
Daniel and I chose to send our children to public schools. I happily give my time and energy as a PTA leader, coach, and advocate on numerous county advisory committees to advance the needs of all the students in Mount Vernon.
